Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) lessons aim to equip our pupils with a sound understanding of risk and the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions.  We use a scheme of work to help us to deliver our PSHE which is called "Jigsaw".  This is a comprehensive programme for Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, which offers a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw helps us to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.  An outline of the Jigsaw scheme of work for each year group is shared below.

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

Our RSHE is integrated with our PSHE curriculum.  At Loughborough C of E Primary School, we understand the importance of educating pupils about sex and relationships, in order for pupils to make responsible and well-informed decisions in their lives.

All pupils must be taught the aspects of sex education outlined in the primary science curriculum – this includes teaching about the main external parts of the human body, how it changes as it grows from birth to old age, including puberty, and the reproductive process in some plants and animals.

At our school, we do not teach pupils sex education beyond what is required of the science curriculum.

From September 2020, parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from lessons on Relationships or Health Education or the Science Curriculum.
